Growing Up in Style
The constant barrage of twenty-something celebrities with long legs and micro minis both in magazines and on television, can make it all too easy for us real women to throw in the towel on the fashion world. At Gemini we have had many an email asking for help, exclaiming that ‘Everything’s too young, too short, too tight, too bright!’
But Good news ladies! This week in The Telegraph Hilary Alexander has reported that the youthquake that has kept so many of us in thrall to the likes and looks of Cheryl Cole and Sienna Miller is losing pole position or, most certainly, being seriously challenged! Look at the evidence – Sandra Bullock, 49, has just been named the top money-making star of 2009. Meryl Streep (who made seventh place) is starring in the new comedy ‘It’s Complicated’, and has been voted the sexiest 60-year old at the box office. Moira Stuart, also 60, is making a comeback on Chris Evans’s Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2. Twiggy, yet another 60-year old, appears to be single-handedly responsible for Marks & Spencer’s sell-out success story over Christmas; a pink coat she modelled.
And don’t forget the enduring power, appeal and style chutzpah of the likes of Dame Judi Dench, 75, Dame Helen Mirren, 64, Joanna Lumley, 63, Nigella Lawson, who turned 50 a few days ago, and Kristin Scott Thomas, 49. So if you’ve turned 40, perhaps it’s time to turn your back on Gossip Girls and base your style on one of the Golden Oldies…

Last Tuesday the Gemini Fashion Store was buzzing with excited customers as we converted our store into a runway! Our resident models Michelle and Maggie were styled by Caroline from Stills and Emma from Sandwich, who showed us how to piece together the different trends for Autumn Winter. We particularly loved the goody bags and champagne!!

Are you too old to wear a miniskirt?
Young women just love this season’s miniskirts – but so do their mothers!
A survey published by Debenhams this month has revealed that women are clinging on to their mini skirts for longer! Where once we would take cover in demure knee-lengths during our early thirties now we are strutting our luscious legs throughout our 40’s!
So does this mean that we should all throw caution to the wind, ignore what our mothers told us about our hemlines and embrace the desire to don a mini skirt?
We got chatting to the staff and customers here at Gemini and the general consensus was that it is all about ‘how you wear it’, regardless of what age you are. So we have come up with the three main do’s and don'ts to wearing the mini skirt this Autumn/Winter.
DON’T…
team your mini skirt with a revealing top. No matter how tempted you are to wear a plunging neckline, DON’T – instead team with a luxe knit, this will help create a demure office look and avoid a ‘working girl’ look!
DO…
team your mini skirt with leggings and boots. For those of us who are not as confident with bearing all, leggings and boots are an easy way to wear the mini skirt and was a look that was seen all over the AW10 catwalks.
DON’T…
wear a mini skirt if you dont feel confident. It’s true, looking good comes from within and if you dont feel confident in your mini skirt then people will know!
